The Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI),is investigating the possible role of some former ministers,at least one MP and bureaucrats during the Left Front regime between 2006 and 2009 about coal block scam. Many of the bureaucrats under the scanner are still serving the present government.
It has been learnt that CBI has asked for details of the coal blocks allotted to private parties by the previous CPI (M) led government from its discretionary quota. The investigating agency has sought files and details of the recommendations made by former ministers and bureaucrats in favour of private industries while allotting coal blocks, a senior state government official said. The CBI has also asked for the memoranda of understanding (MOUs) signed between the then West Bengal government and private companies regarding coal block allotment.
The Union coal ministry had handed over documents regarding coal block allotment to the CBI, which may have stimulated the agency to look at certain allotments in Bengal.
Between 2006 and 2009, a total of 66 coal blocks were allotted to 46 private companies selected from a list of 1,422 applicants nationwide. Out of the 66 coal blocks allotted, six were given to West Bengal under the coal-bearing state quota formula, which it was free to allot. Out of the six, three went to JSW Steel for its Salboni project, two went to Jai Balaji Steel, while one was given to the West Bengal Mineral Development and Trading Corporation
