Bengal government organises Save Ganga campaign

KOLKATA: The Save Ganga campaign that the state government had started on April this year culminated at millennium park on Sunday.

State urban development minister Firhad Hakim, along with other senior officials of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority and the Kolkata municipal corporation walked along the river front stretch from Princep Street to Millennium Park. In the afternoon, there were elocution contest, quiz, drama, dance drama and performance by a Bengali music band, all based on the Save Ganga theme. Authorities of the Uttarpara and Khardah municipalities brought bus-loads of people to receive prizes from the minister. Besides, spectators who were watching the programmes were given calenders, mobile covers etc with the Save Ganga logo.

It was for a long time that the government was planning to have an awareness programme on saving the river Ganga under the National Ganga River Basin Project. The concept was planned last year in July and the plan was to continue it till the book fair event takes place on January. The plan was to organise the campaign during the festival seasons to address the public. However, the plan could not be implemented last year due to various administrative reasons.
The state government is presently working on the river front beautification project that was earlier launched by chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
