Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday promised permanent shelters to people migrating from Assam in the wake of the violence that rocked the state recently.
“We condemn this ethnic violence. I am ready to give permanent shelters to those entering our state from the strife-stricken areas,” she said while addressing a congregation of Muslims at the Red Road where they had come to offer Eid prayers.
“Do not listen to rumours. Please maintain peace and harmony... We will give all support (to Assam) in the prevailing situation,” she told the congregation.
At the same venue, Imam Qazi Fazlur Rahman said people protesting against the violence should do it peacefully without taking the law in their hands.
Had the Assam government taken prompt and necessary steps, things would not have reached such a stage, he added.
