New Delhi: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has thrown yet another googly at the Centre, claiming in an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN's sister channel IBN7, that he will not oppose a resolution in Parliament against foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail.
Speaking to Prabhu Chawla on Teekhi Baat, the SP chief said that he would back Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee if she moves a resolution in Parliament against FDI in retail.
"Mamata ji is secular. If she brings in a resolution in the House against FDI, we will not oppose it. We will hold a Parliamentary Board meeting. We will speak to like-minded parties on the matter. We will support her. It is also possible that our party may bring in the resolution," Mulayam said.
The SP chief added that his party will speak against the government's anti-people policies, saying that his support to the Centre was only meant to keep the "communal forces" at bay.
"Our support to the government is to keep the communal forces away. We will demand the government takes back its decision (FDI in retail). The fact is we oppose it and will oppose it at all costs. Maybe the government will get some good thoughts and take back its decision," said Mulayam.
The Congress, however, was guarded in its response with its Rajya Sabha MP Renuka Chowdhary insisting that Mulayam was a respected ally. "There is no direct threat to the government. Mr Mulayam Singh is a seasoned politician and understands our limitation just like we understand his. He is a respected ally."
