Girl lodges complaint against landlord, cops

KOLKATA: A second-year college student has lodged a written complaint with the police commissioner of Barrackpore, alleging that she was illegally detained at the Khardah policestation after being eve-teased and verbally abused by her landlord. According to her, the police registered her complaint but also persuaded the accused to lodge a counter-complaint against her. Police commissioner Sanjay Singh has promised to look into the allegations.
The young woman and her elder sister, a part-time college teacher, shared a rented accommodation at Sodepur's Deshbandhu Road for the last four months. A dispute arose after the landlord Shiban Chakraborty refused to issue a rent receipt to them.
On Sunday, the college student prepared to vacate the premises with the help of her cousin brother when Chakraborty turned up with some youths and stopped them from leaving. He demanded that the woman pay him two months' rent that was due. The student insisted that she would pay only if he issued a receipt. This led to a war of words and local councilllor Smriti Chakraborty - a relative of the landlord's - also stepped in.
The woman alleged that the landlord, youths and councillor verbally abused her and questioned her relationship with her cousin. The local councillor, however, said that she had merely tried to sort out the issue.
