Srinagar: From across the border in Jammu and Kashmir, the guns have started booming again. Over the last 10 days, Pakistani troops have fired at Indian posts across the LoC and the international border in Jammu as many as nine times.
It is a blatant violation of the 2003 ceasefire accord, and India has lodged its protest.
On Pakistan's Independence Day on Tuesday, its troops exchanged sweets with Indian soldiers. But the very next day, on August 15, they fired on Indian forward posts.
The Army says the Pakistan troops are giving cover fire to more militants crossing over into India.
Army sources say there have been 35 ceasefire violations till mid-August this year as against 51 cases in 2011 and 44 in 2010.
Two soldiers have died and nearly 10 have been injured this year alone.
The truce on the LoC had come as a huge relief and instilled a lot of confidence to the farmers living on either side of the fence after years of mortar poundings. But if the recent and regular sniping cases are any indication, that confidence may not last long.
The spurt in gunfire follow several infiltration attempts in which more than 35 militants crossed over to the Indian side.
If the 400 mt tunnel across the LoC in Samba was not detected on time, more would have been on their way.
