‘Key documents of 1993 firing incident missing’

Home Secretary Submits 14-page report to the inquiry panel set up by CM to probe the incident
Some of the crucial documents relating to the July 21, 1993 police firing incident in which 13 Youth Congress workers were killed and 200 others were injured at Kolkata’s Curzon Park are missing from the government files. State Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee on Wednesday informed this to the special inquiry commission, which has been set up by Trinamool Congress-led government to probe the incident that took place during the Left Front government.
Banerjee, who appeared before the commission chaired by former Chief Justice Sushanto Chattopadhyay today, submitted the documents which were available with the state government.
“I have submitted a 14-page report, which contains certain references about the incidents. However, most of the relevant documents of the home department are misisng,” the Home Secretary said after appearing before the panel.
Justice Chattopadhyay also confirmed this. “The state Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee informed me that the documents relating to the incident which were submitted by the then police commissioner to the then state home secretary were not traceable,” he told mediapersons.
A senior Home Department official said the missing documents include police reports, the report about the police arrangement and the Intelligence Bureau reports about the incident.
“The incident took place 19 years ago. And no file could be traced. We have started digitising our documents. So that no document goes missing,” added Banerjee.
The Home Secretary was scheduled to appear before the commission last month. Since he was in Darjeeling at that time, he was asked to appear today.
The inquiry commission was set up in February this year by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to probe the events related to the firing and those responsible for it during a demonstration organised by the Youth Congress of which she was the president then. The terms of reference for the commission also included inquiry into the present condition of the victims’ families and the status of the police cases registered on the incident.
The commission has also been asked to assess and recommend compensation if any required to be paid to the victims.
Every year, Trinamool Congress observes the day as Martyrs’ Day.
