New Zealand win T20, Yuvraj comes out strong
Chennai:
It was Yuvraj Singh return to cricket after battling a cancerous tumor for the last one year. And what a return it was. He bowled two overs quite economically for a T20, nearly took a wicket, took a catch, and to top it all batted for a well paced inning 34 from 26 balls in the second T20 international against New Zealand on Tuesday, in Chennai. In a thriller of an encounter, that saw New Zealand clinch the contest by just one run, the biggest gain was the fact that Yuvi announced his comeback to cricket in a grand manner just before the World T2
Given a competitive target of 168, India had Virat Kohli starting as an opener along with Gautam Gambhir. Kohli went on to score 70 off 41 balls after Gambhir departed early just for three.
Suresh Raina played a brisk innings of 27 before his downfall brought Yuvraj, along with the loudest cheer of the day. Yuvi looked tentative, but rested all speculations of his match-fitness with an exquisite boundary off the fifth ball he faced. He added that with two towering sixes later on to send the Chennai crowd into a maddening frenzy. That he was dropped on nine, only added to the drama.
At one point, Yuvraj and MS Dhoni looked to pull off another win after the World Cup in 2011. But Yuvi's fall broke the momentum. With six runs needed off two balls, Rohit Sharma came in, but could just manage four off them.
Earlier on, Brendon McCullum scored a brilliant 55 ball-91 to put New Zealand in charge after the fall of two wickets in the first two overs oftheir innings. Not to be overwhelmed by all the jubilation that surrounded Yuvi's return, McCullum went about doin what he does best -- hitting the ball hard to the fence. He innings was studded with 11 boundaries and three sixes.
Irfan Pathan bowled well for India picking up three wickets for 31. Zaheer Khan, who struck in the very first over, and Laxmipathy Balaji took one wicket each.
