Bangalore: Indian batsman fought back against some torrid bowling from New Zealand to take the second Test here by 5 wickets on Monday and claim the series 2-0. This is the fourth highest successful run-chase in Tests played in India.
Zaheer Khan claimed the last Kiwi batsman as Day 4 began after the visitors had added 16 runs to their overnight score of 232. While there were some hiccups on a sporting track, Virat Kohli (51*) and MS Dhoni (48*) took India home.
The hosts were set as a target of 261 and the Indian batsman got starts but departed at crucial stages to keep New Zealand in the hunt. The opening stand of 77 was broken by Jeetan Patel's spin when he bowled Virender Sehwag on 38.
Cheteshwar Pujara walked in to partner Gautam Gambhir and helped himself to 48 runs before being removed by Patel again. By now, India had also lost Gambhir on 34, claimed by Trent Boult.
Sachin Tendulkar looked like taking India to the finishing line with a 64-run stand with Pujara but was bowled, again, by Tim Southee.
Southee had claimed seven wickets in the first innings but this was his solitary success on Monday as Kohli and Dhoni ensured India did not lose any more wickets and came home to seal another win inside five days of Test cricket.
With the win, Dhoni has become the most successful Indian captain in Tests played at home. He has 14 wins to his name, overtaking 13 under Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly's 10.
The two teams now play 2 T20s with the first being contested on Saturday - September 8.
