New Delhi: There anger is rising among the aam aadmi, political parties and traders over the decision to hike diesel prices by Rs 5 per litre, which came into effect on Friday. Protests are on in Mumbai, Chandigarh, Karnal and Kanpur over the government's decision to not just diesel price hike but also limiting the usage of LPG to 6 cylinders per household.
There are hard times in store for the consumer, especially in Mumbai. The Bombay Goods and Transport association has said that the prices of vegetables and raw materials for industrial goods will climb up by at least 10 per cent due to diesel price hike.
The association has, in fact, requested Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to reduce taxes on diesel and petrol in order to balance the prices with that of other metros.
UPA allies like the TMC, DMK and NCP along with the Opposition parties have slammed the decision. Sources also say that the Sonia Gandhi-led Congress Core Group was against the decision, but was finally convinced by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to end policy paralysis and bring in big-ticket reforms.
The aam aadmi is hit hard by the rise in prices. "It will affect the family budget severely. We have been under inflation pressure for two years. Recent electricity budget plus this makes things difficult," said a consumer in Delhi.
"This decision is going to adversely affect a hard working common man like me. It's getting difficult to drive a car these days," said another consumer in Delhi.
Another consumer in Mumbai said, "The increase in the price of diesel will affect the poor like us the most. As a result of this inflation will increase."
