KOLKATA: A 10-member urban planning team from Afghanistan came at Rajarhat New Town recently and met officials of the West BengalHousing Infrastructure and Development Corporation (Hidco) to discuss on urban planning. The team is designing a new city called Dehsabz city in the north of Kabul of Afghanistan. Officials came at Rajarhat to look into the way how Rajarhat New Town is coming up.
"Dehsabz means Green Village", explained Ahmadi Mumtaz Ahmad, the team leader that met Hidco chairman cum managing director Debashis Sen. The township will be designed for about 3 million people spreading over 700 sq km of area.
The authorities there still have not acquired the land, the team said. The Dehsabz City Development Authority was working to assemble land but the tribal leaders there did not want to handover their land holdings.
Sen gave his viewpoint in the meeting, saying that perhaps 700 sq km for 3 million people would produce a sprawl that would not be environment friendly. Providing security would also be a problem. Sen advocated for a more dense city so that the township will have adequate open and green space.
Hidco is setting up Rajarhat New Town that will have a population of over 15 lakh in the near future, apart from a floating population of another 5 lakh. The authorities are carefully setting up the required civic infrastructure such as main roads, street lights, link roads, drainage and sewerage lines and others.
